- Language - The people making culinary television programs need to either get haricot vert its own Wikipedia entry or acknowledge that they’re saying “green beans” in French. No one wants to see the Jolly Green Giant get angry.
- Loans - Once again, Gail Collins has dedicated her column to the cause of streamlining the student loan process, as per President Obama’s proposed budget. For a slightly more objective breakdown of the proposed changes, you can see the Times‘ piece from March. In opposition, a group of Senators led by Lamar Alexander sought to include an amendment in the budget bill
“To modify the Deficit-Neutral Reserve Fund for Higher Education, to maximize higher education access and affordability by ensuring that institutions of higher education and their students are able to continue to participate in a competitive student loan program, in order to maintain a comprehensive choice of student loan products and services.” (S.AMDT.792)
Rhetoric about competition also abounds in the Bloomberg story about Republican opposition, but it’s a bit unclear either how lenders are competing when they’re offering loans with identical terms set by the federal government or how a program operated without them would necessitate their departure from the market. By the same token, it seems odd to end a covert bank-subsidy program while continuing our overt ones.
